Not an obvious location for dataenters, Des Moines is a good location nonetheless. Lower power rates and low risk of natural disasters make it a good choice for a central US deployment. Carrier neutral colocation providers consider it a tertiary metro with only LightEdge, OneNeck and InfoBunker leasing colo space.
Des Monies is the capital city of Iowa, the state which casts the first lot for the US President. The city has 216,000 people, however, the surrounding MSA has 635,000 residents.
Electric power is economical in Des Moines with the average commercial electricity rate at 6.76¢/kWh. Iowa also doesn't apply sales tax to power use. While coal is the predominant energy source, wind is becoming a larger source (27.5% in 2013). In 2013, MidAmeria Energy added 138 MegaWatts of Wind generating capacity in conjunction with the Facebook Altoona data center announcement.
