Townsite DC: Boulder City

After withdrawing the first site, Townsite Solar 2 LLC is going for a new 80-acre federally owned parcel to build out the renamed Townsite Data Center. The original project—which proposed up to six data center buildings on 88.5 acres of city-owned land—was canceled following intense public opposition and a 6–1 vote by the Boulder City Planning Commission recommending against data center land leases.

In its place, the developer amended an existing solar right-of-way with the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to construct a consolidated four-building data center campus complete with on-site battery storage along U.S. Highway 95. While shifting to federal land bypassed municipal zoning controls, the relocation has prompted formal legal appeals from Boulder City and conservation groups over environmental review shortcuts, desert tortoise habitat impacts, and municipal water demands.
