Apple's Move to Renewable Energy

In 2010, Apple reported that just 16% of its total facilities were powered by renewables. Within just six years, that number skyrocketed up to 96% in 2016. In 2018, Apple said that it has achieved 100% renewable energy. Source: cleantechnica.com.

As of early 2018, Apple had 25 operational renewable energy projects around the world, totaling 626 MW of generation capacity. Notably, 286 MW of solar PV generation came online in 2017. There are 15 more projects under construction that represent over 1.4 GW of renewable energy generation across 11 countries.

In Prineville, Ore., the Apple signed a 200 MW power purchase agreement for an Oregon wind farm, the Montague Wind Power Project, set to come online by the end of 2019.

Apple’s data center in Maiden, N.C., is supported by projects that generate 244 million kWh of renewable energy per year, which is equivalent to the energy used by 17,906 North Carolina homes.

Apple's first data center in Asia was built in the Hong Kong territory near the Shenzhen border. Construction started in 2013 and was finished in 2015.

Apple is investing $175 million to expand its existing data center in Maiden. Permits indicate the project will add a 237,600 square-foot facility on land already owned by the company.

The data center will be located next to one of Denmark’s largest electrical substations, which Apple said will help it eliminate the need for additional generators. The facility is designed to capture excess heat from equipment inside and conduct it into the district heating system to help warm homes in the neighboring community.

The site was a former a sapphire-glass factory that supplied glass to Apple. The glass maker filed for bankruptcy and vacated the building in 2014. Now the 1.3 million square foot building is one of Apple’s data centers

Apple expanded its Reno Data Center Campus with a second phase that added approximately 400,000-square-foot data centers in Sparks, Nevada.

Apple expanded its Reno Data Center Campus with a third phase that added approximately 400,000-square-foot data centers in Sparks, Nevada.

Apple initially started in 2012 with 160 acres in Prineville to build a 338,000 square foot data center. At the time the facility planned to draw 20 Megawatts. Now the campus is set to grow to 3.2 million square feet.
