Apple's North Carolina data center campus spans 183 acres and consists of multiple buildings totaling over 1 million square feet. Initially, Apple constructed a 505,000 square foot data center and a much smaller, 21,030 square foot “tactical” data center. Subsequently, Apple has built two additional data centers at the site. Apple is still expanding its campus in maiden with new developments under construction.

Overall, Apple has invested about $3 billion into its Maiden, North Carolina data center campus, which employs around 400 people. Furthermore, in April 2021, Apple committed an incremental $448 million for construction, improvements, and equipment at its Maiden data center, over the next 10 years.

Alternative Energy

Apple has built three solar farms, each valued at around $10 million, as well as a 10-megawatt fuel cell installation, valued at least at $4 million. One solar farm is across the street from the Maiden data center, while the second solar farm is in Conover and the 3rd farm is in Claremont.

The 200-acre array of photovoltaic solar panels serves as a supplement to its utility power feed from Duke Energy as well as fuel cells from Bloom Energy that use biogas from nearby landfills to generate electricity. Apple says its generation facilities at the Maiden NC facility produce enough on-site renewable energy to power 14,000 homes.

Apple's Move to Renewable Energy

In 2010, Apple reported that just 16% of its total facilities were powered by renewables. Within just six years, that number skyrocketed up to 96% in 2016. In 2018, Apple said that it has achieved 100% renewable energy. Source: cleantechnica.com.

As of early 2018, Apple had 25 operational renewable energy projects around the world, totaling 626 MW of generation capacity. Notably, 286 MW of solar PV generation came online in 2017. There are 15 more projects under construction that represent over 1.4 GW of renewable energy generation across 11 countries.

In Prineville, Ore., the Apple signed a 200 MW power purchase agreement for an Oregon wind farm, the Montague Wind Power Project, set to come online by the end of 2019.

Apple’s data center in Maiden, N.C., is supported by projects that generate 244 million kWh of renewable energy per year, which is equivalent to the energy used by 17,906 North Carolina homes.
