In a major victory for local opposition groups, Hanover County officials in Virginia have rejected a massive 430-acre data center proposal by master-planned land developer Tract. The project, known as the Mountain Road Technology Park, was slated to deliver up to 900MW of capacity by 2034, requiring a rezoning from agricultural to light industrial land.
However, following a tight Board of Supervisors vote in May 2026, the conditional-use permit was denied. Local residents fiercely mobilized against the development through petitions and advocacy groups like Stop Hanover Data Centers, citing deep concerns over immense water and electricity usage, the sacrifice of rural character, and the encroachment of industrial Big Tech on agricultural communities.
