European cloud firm Nebius is spearheading a massive AI data center campus in Independence, Missouri, positioned just outside Kansas City. The project, often referred to as an "AI factory," is set to span across a master-planned, multi-building campus located on 400 acres within the Eastgate Commerce Center.
To support the substantial energy requirements of the campus, the project utilizes a dedicated power solution: Independence Power Partners (IPP) is privately financing the redevelopment of the decommissioned Blue Valley Power Plant. Once revitalized, this facility will supply electricity directly to the data center site.
Following the official groundbreaking in May 2026, construction is underway on the initial building. This first phase is scheduled to become operational by October 2027, with the entire campus projected to reach full buildout by 2029. Representing a landmark $6.6 billion investment, the development is positioned to establish the region as a major hub for global AI infrastructure.
