The $1.2 billion, University of Michigan–Los Alamos “Michigan-SPARC” supercomputing campus is officially deferred, with its future location and timeline in jeopardy.
Planned for Ypsilanti Township, the project faced months of intense resident protests over high water use (up to 200,000 gallons per day) and power demand. Opposition led the Township Board to request a site shift to Willow Run. The Ypsilanti City Council further escalated the fight, passing a resolution to halt the project entirely and dissolve the partnership, citing the Los Alamos nuclear legacy.
While U-M says it is "reevaluating" the Willow Run alternative, no revised timeline has been released, and the construction start has slipped to 2027. Every local public body now formally opposes the original site, leaving Michigan-SPARC’s viability in limbo.
