• Update: Following weeks of intense pressure from local residents and state legislators, the Michigan Public Service Commission (MPSC) has officially moved to halt the fast-track approval process for the controversial Stargate data center utility agreement.

OpenAI, Oracle, and Related Digital are partnering to build a gigawatt-plus data center campus in Saline Township, Michigan, dubbed The Barn. Covering 250 acres, the facility will feature three massive single-story buildings. This project is a component of Stargate, OpenAI's substantial $500 billion investment intended to significantly expand its digital infrastructure and computing power over the next four years. To conserve resources, the campus is designed to use a closed-loop cooling system to limit water consumption.

Construction, managed by Walbridge, is scheduled to begin in early 2026, pending necessary approval from the Michigan Public Service Commission. DTE Energy will provide all the power for the campus. This energy will come from existing sources supplemented by a new battery storage system, which the project itself is completely financing.
