Meta is looking to expand its data center campus in Richmond, Virginia. According to Richmond BizSense, Meta acquired 475 acres of land close to its existing facility within White Oak Technology Park in Henrico County. The social media company plans to develop new data centers under the umbrella of 'Project Tropical.' Per information on the County's real estate page, the land was sold to Scout Development LLC for $35.2m in October 2022. Scout Development also purchased the White Oak land in 2017 on behalf of Meta.
Since the purchase, Meta (formerly Facebook) has filed to develop two facilities at 3951 Portugee Road, south of its existing data center campus in White Oak Technology Park. Meta picked up from where it left in 2021 in the area of expansions this year. The company has announced expansion plans on its Gallatin data center campus in Tennessee, its Huntsville data center in Alabama, its DeKalb facility in Illinois, its New Albany campus in Ohio, its Eagle Mountain campus in Utah, and its Sarpy facility in Nebraska. It has also announced plans for new data center locations in Kansas, Texas, Idaho, and Spain.
