As the first phase of the project in White Oak Technology Park nears completion, the social media giant said Wednesday it will invest an additional $750 million to expand the data center complex it launched last year with a $1 billion investment.
The Richmond Times-Dispatch reported on Monday, based on multiple sources, that Facebook would invest an additional $1 billion to add three buildings to the White Oak complex. The company spent $750 million on the first phase, which consists of two buildings and an electric substation, and committed $250 million for an innovative electric tariff to pay for new solar energy facilities to offset the project’s power use.
The company expects to complete the first phase of the project next year, creating an additional 100 full-time jobs after construction, for a total of more than 200 at the data center complex, the company said.
