South Korean technology giant Naver successfully launched the first phase of its Sejong data center, Gak Sejong, in late 2023. Dubbed the "Cloud Ring," the massive facility spans 290,000 square meters (3.1 million square feet). At full capacity, it is designed to house 600,000 servers, significantly bolstering Naver’s infrastructure for AI and cloud services. The company’s initial investment for this landmark project reached approximately $500 million.
The development journey began in 2019 with initial planning, followed by an official announcement in 2020 and the start of construction in 2021. While the original completion target was set for late 2022, the project's first phase opened in 2023. This initial phase represents about one-third of the planned ring-shaped complex, with Naver planning to complete the phase-two and phase-three expansions in 2028 and 2029, respectively.
