The multi-billion dollar Google data center campus in Fort Wayne, known as Project Zodiac, is an expansive economic development project currently under construction and partially operational as of late 2025, with an initial investment of at least $2 billion committed to power its Google Cloud and AI infrastructure. The project was originally announced in late 2023 and officially confirmed by Google in early 2024.

However, the project recently entered a controversial Phase 2 expansion when the developers requested and received permission from the Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) to fill in nearly two-and-a-half acres of regulated wetlands to make way for five additional data center buildings and associated infrastructure. This decision was met with significant local opposition, including environmental groups and residents concerned about the loss of the wetlands' critical functions like flood control and water quality, as well as the overall strain the massive facility places on local water and power resources. Despite public requests for a hearing, IDEM issued the permit in September 2025, requiring Google to mitigate the loss by purchasing wetland credits in a different part of Allen County, underscoring the ongoing tension between large-scale tech development and environmental preservation.
