Chinese solar developer Jinko Power, a subsidiary of the broader Jinko Solar Group, is planning a 1GW data center project in Ningxia, western China, that will be powered directly by a dedicated solar facility. According to a report by Nikkei, the company has signed a framework investment agreement with the Zhongwei municipal government to develop the desert-based data center.

The project is expected to require an investment of approximately RMB 24.5 billion ($3.6 billion) and will span more than 534,000 square meters (5.75 million square feet). Jinko Power plans to roll out roughly 50,000 standard server racks across three development phases, marking the company's first major venture into the data center sector.

The project supports China’s Eastern Data, Western Computing strategy, which promotes data center development in the country’s western regions to take advantage of abundant renewable energy and cooler climates. Shanghai-based Jinko Solar is one of the world’s largest solar panel manufacturers. Its affiliate, Jinko Power, has 6.5GW of installed capacity and a domestic project pipeline of more than 30GW.GettyImages-1177302933_1.width-358.webp
