Plans Filed for 1.2GW Data Center Campus in Irwin County, Georgia

In Athens-Clarke County, Georgia, a large-scale land use conflict was resolved when commissioners denied a controversial rezoning request for a proposed 2-million square foot data center on 233 acres along Old Elberton Road. The proposal was formally filed by attorney William Diehl on behalf of the property’s owner, FAE Clark LLC, though the identity of the end-user remains unknown.
The project was rejected due to serious concerns over its colossal power and water consumption, projected noise pollution, and the incompatibility of such an industrial facility within the agriculturally zoned area. This decisive action was quickly followed by the passage of an emergency moratorium on all new data center proposals, effectively halting future applications while the county works to establish stringent new regulations for managing these high-impact developments.
