Property developer Eagle Rock has proposed a massive $8.8 billion data center campus in Christian County, Illinois, marking a major potential shift for a state whose digital infrastructure is heavily clustered around Chicago.
Spanning 475 acres, the planned facility would feature ten buildings utilizing water-conserving, closed-loop cooling systems. However, local residents have already launched a petition calling for an 18-month moratorium and independent impact studies to pause development. Even if the project secures approval, Eagle Rock founding partner Ken Loeber noted that construction is a long-term play, with breaking ground pushed out until 2029 or 2030.
