Property developer Eagle Rock has proposed building a 1GW data center campus in Christian County, Illinois. The $8.8 billion project would span 475 acres south of E 1100 North Road, west of N 900 East Road, north of County Road 1000 North, and east of N 800 East Road. According to WAND News, the development would include ten 100MW data center buildings.
The facility is expected to use closed-loop cooling, according to Eagle Rock founding partner Ken Loeber, who attended an informational session hosted by the Christian County Economic Development Corporation on June 2. Loeber also told Capitol City Now that, even if approved, construction would not begin until 2029 or 2030.
Opposition to the project surfaced shortly after its announcement.
A petition urging an “immediate 18-month moratorium on data center developments in Christian County,” along with calls for independent studies and public hearings, has gathered nearly 700 signatures.
Christian County is in central Illinois, while most of Illinois’ data centers are concentrated around the Chicago area.
