Microsoft's Texas Research Park campus sits on Lambda Drive at the west end of the Texas Research Park, on San Antonio's far west side near State Highway 211, about five miles west of Loop 1604.

  • Land: Microsoft bought the site from the Texas Research & Technology Foundation in December 2015, announced as 158 acres, for a planned $1 billion, 1 million sq ft campus. Microsoft now owns about 171 acres in two appraisal accounts: about 116 acres in Bexar County, platted as the Rafter 2 subdivision, and 55.5 acres in Medina County.
  • Power infrastructure: CPS Energy serves the campus from its Rafter 138 kV substation, on an 8.7-acre lot inside the campus that Microsoft deeded to the City of San Antonio in May 2016. Rafter ties to CPS 138 kV lines toward the Omicron, Texas Research, Cagnon and Castroville substations. CPS plans to rebuild the Omicron line and add a second Castroville circuit.
  • Backup generation: 172 Tier 2 diesel generators rated 0.4 to 3.9 MW, registered with TCEQ under PBR registration 155872.
  • History: Construction began in January 2016. Microsoft registered SAT09-SAT13 as a Texas qualifying large data center project in December 2015 and later added SAT40 and SAT46. Corgan, Phillips Architecture and Page Southerland Page designed the phases, and contractors included Turner Construction and Rogers-O'Brien.
  • Neighbors: CyrusOne, Vantage, CloudHQ and QTS hold data center sites elsewhere in the park.

Microsoft uses Containers (called ITPACs) to build out its data centers. These Containers are Shipping Containers fitted with all the necessary climate control, networking, server racks and other hardware necessary to be a “mini” data center all in one.

Azure Regions

An Azure region is a set of data centers deployed within a latency-defined perimeter and connected through a dedicated regional low-latency network.

With more global regions than any other cloud provider, Azure gives customers the flexibility to deploy applications where they need to. Azure is generally available in 46 regions around the world, with plans announced for 8 additional regions.

Geographies

An Azure geography is a discrete market, typically containing two or more regions, that preserves data residency and compliance boundaries.

Geographies allow customers with specific data-residency and compliance needs to keep their data and applications close. Geographies are fault-tolerant to withstand complete region failure through their connection to our dedicated high-capacity networking infrastructure.

Availability Zones

Availability Zones are physically separate locations within an Azure region. Each Availability Zone is made up of one or more data centers equipped with independent power, cooling, and networking.

Availability Zones allow customers to run mission-critical applications with high availability and low-latency replication.
