Google's campus in The Dalles, Wasco County, Oregon, spans three nearby sites on Columbia River industrial land at the west end of the city. Google subsidiary Design LLC owns all three.
Sites
-
Original site (4200 Columbia Road). Design LLC bought about 30 acres from the Port of The Dalles in 2005 under the code name "02". It became Google's first company-owned data center in 2006. Google replaced the original electrical plant in 2012 and announced a $600 million expansion in 2013.
-
Taylor Lake (4400 River Trail Way). Design LLC bought 23 acres beside Taylor Lake from the Port in 2015, about 0.7 km north of the original site.
-
River Road (3500 River Road). Design LLC bought the 74-acre former Martin Marietta / Northwest Aluminum smelter site and Fort Dalles Rodeo grounds in March 2016, about 1 km southwest of the original site. The smelter site was an EPA Superfund cleanup site.
Power. Northern Wasco County PUD serves all three sites, mostly with BPA power. BPA's Chenoweth Substation (230/115 kV) and Discovery Substation (115 kV) sit beside the original site. BPA completed the 230 kV, breaker-and-a-half Quenett Creek Substation next to Chenoweth in 2019 for the PUD's 300 MW interconnection request. Two PUD 230 kV lines run from Quenett Creek into Google's customer-owned Taylor Lake-1 substation, and two on-site 230 kV substations feed the River Road buildings. In 2025 Google contracted more than 100 MW of the repowered Leaning Juniper IIB wind project in Gilliam County, delivered by the PUD.
Agreements and water. Long-Term Rural Enterprise Zone agreements with the City of The Dalles and Wasco County covered the first three phases. A November 2021 Strategic Investment Program agreement covers the two River Road buildings. Under the 2021 deal, Google transferred groundwater rights from the smelter site and a $28.5 million aquifer storage and recovery system to the city.
Milestones. The city approved the first River Road building in November 2022 and the second in January 2024. Google stripped one 2006 hall in 2025 and demolished it in 2026. In August 2026 the city approved a 77,000 sq ft replacement, with no tax abatement. Oregon DEQ permits the sites separately (ACDP 33-0022 "DLS", 33-0028 "TLK", 33-0061 River Road).
