Pau to Build 1MW Data Center in Push for Digital Sovereignty

Jul 07, 2026 | Posted by Abdul-Rahman Oladimeji

The French city of Pau is building a €3 million ($3.4 million), 1MW data center to support local businesses and government agencies. Funded by the Pau Béarn Pyrénées Agglomeration (CAPBP), which comprises 31 communes in the Pau region, the facility will be operated by French data center company Axione.

According to the CAPBP, the data center “will be a key component of the digital development of the Pau region. It will offer data hosting services to government agencies as well as all local partners in the economy and digital sectors.”

The CAPBP said the project will strengthen data security by ensuring information is stored and managed locally. The new 450 sqm (4,845 sq ft) facility will house up to 44 racks, replacing the city's existing 14-rack server room, and will use free cooling with a maximum PUE of 1.4. Construction is underway, with the data center expected to open in October 2027.
