The Council Bluffs data center, located on the Nebraska/Iowa border, will be expanded by Google for $350 million. Plans for a data center in Council Bluffs were first made public in 2007. Google announced expansion plans in 2012 and 2015 and has since spent approximately $5 billion on the facility as well as others in the region/state.

The data center's expansion will enable artificial intelligence and boost the site's capacity for cloud storage, which is important given the rising demand for these services. The expansion will bring additional employment to the facility, which already employs 900 people.

Google has two facilities in Council Bluffs, one close to Lake Manawa and the other Southlands campus. The Southlands Council Bluff campus consists of four buildings totaling 2,900,000 square feet.

In addition to the data center investment, Google has provided the Advance Southwest Iowa Corporation with a $250,000 grant to establish a co-working entrepreneurial hub that will assist local business owners in getting started.
