Google will invest $17 billion in its first data center in Wyoming, a campus in Laramie County near Cheyenne, the company said on Nov. 5. The number puts a price on a project Baxtel reported in October, when American substackcdn.comFeatured: Wide aerial rendering of Google's planned Project Tembo hyperscale data center campus near Cheyenne, Wyoming.Electric Power disclosed a 20-year power purchase agreement to build a 702MW fuel cell plant for the site.

Google is developing the campus with Tallgrass Energy, Black Hills Energy, American Electric Power and Related Digital. AEP will build and own the fuel cell plant and sell its output to Google under the 20-year contract, with Bloom Energy supplying the solid oxide cells. The cells run on natural gas, and Tallgrass will store the captured carbon dioxide at its Eastern Wyoming Sequestration Hub. Google says it will also buy power from gas generators run by Tallgrass Energy and Black Hills Energy.

The campus covers 716 acres in the Switchgrass Industrial Park, about eight miles south of Cheyenne, and calls for four data halls, an office building, and logistics and network buildings, Data Center Dynamics reports. Google targets full build-out in 2031, and earlier reports put the site at as much as 2.7GW. Google has not disclosed the data center's capacity.

The land was formerly Project Jade, a campus that Crusoe began and then paused in June. Google took over the project through subsidiary Jupiter Star Holdings and refiled it as Project Tembo, according to Cowboy State Daily. Google says the data center will be air-cooled to limit water use, and that Google will pay for 100 percent of the power it consumes.

"Our Wyoming data center will be air-cooled to minimize strain on local water resources," said Steve Walter,

Google's vice president for global infrastructure and energy. Google and its partners are forming a Community Council for the Cheyenne area, and Google expects the project to generate hundreds of millions of dollars in property taxes for Laramie County and School District 1.

The announcement followed US midterm elections this week, when voters opposed data centers in 40 of 41 local ballot measures, according to Ballotpedia, as reported by Reuters.

Baxtel tracks the project at [Google: Cheyenne, Wyoming](https://baxtel.com/data-center/google-cheyenne-wyoming), a 716-acre site in the [Cheyenne](https://baxtel.com/regions/cheyenne) market with four planned data halls and power records ranging from 200MW for the first building phase to 675MW for later buildings.
