Japanese renewable energy company Eurus Energy has begun construction of the Soya Green Data Center 1 in Hokkaido, developed with Toyota Tsusho. The facility will be Japan’s first data centre directly powered by wind energy, using electricity from the nearby Kobaoko Wind Farm via a private line. The 3MW data centre is being built on a 9, The 3MW data centre is being built on a 9,900 sqm site in Wakkanai and is expected to open in fiscal year 2027.
Toyota Tsusho will operate the data centre services, while Eurus Energy will manage the site, construction, and energy supply. Eurus Energy’s 42MW Kobaoko Wind Farm, which began operations in February 2024, will supply power to the facility. The partners plan to secure additional renewable energy if wind generation is insufficient. Toyota Tsusho and Eurus Energy are also considering a future 10-20MW expansion around 2030 as part of a potential data centre cluster in the region.
The Soya Green Data Center 1 project supports Japan’s push to decentralise data centres beyond Tokyo and Osaka. The wind-powered facility aims to use the Soya region’s renewable energy potential while addressing limited local demand and grid constraints. Toyota Tsusho operates 10 wind farms in the area with a combined capacity of 525.5MW.
