Digital Realty has begun construction of KIX15, a 24-megawatt data center at its KIX Campus in Ibaraki City, Osaka Prefecture, Japan, the company announced on Oct. 7. The facility is being developed by MC Digital Realty, the operator's 50/50 joint venture with Mitsubishi Corporation, and is scheduled to begin operations in the fourth quarter of 2028.
Official architectural rendering of the KIX15 data center released alongside Digital Realty's ground-breaking announcement.
KIX15 is the fifth data center at the KIX Campus, joining the venture's existing KIX10 through KIX13 halls. Once complete it lifts MC Digital Realty's Japan portfolio to 10 data centers and roughly 220MW of aggregate IT capacity, a figure Telecompaper also reports.
The building is engineered for high-density computing with combined air and liquid cooling, a design aimed at accelerator-heavy workloads that older air-cooled halls struggle to support, per Data Centre Magazine. It will serve hyperscalers, cloud providers, and enterprises deploying AI infrastructure, and it anchors the venture's Kansai AI Infrastructure Co-Creation Project.
"Kansai has a growing opportunity to play a larger role in Japan's AI economy," said Kohei Yamashita, Representative Director and CEO of MC Digital Realty. "Realizing that potential will require an ecosystem that can support businesses as they build and scale AI."
"Japan is a strategic market for Digital Realty and a key part of our long-term growth in Asia Pacific," said Serene Nah, Managing Director and Head of Asia Pacific at Digital Realty. "KIX15 is the next step in that commitment."
The build follows the opening of the NRT14 data center in Inzai City, Chiba Prefecture, earlier this year and extends the venture across the Tokyo and Osaka metros. Osaka has become a second front in Japan's capacity race, with NTT, Vantage Data Centers, AirTrunk, CloudHQ, and ESR Group all advancing projects in the region.

Baxtel tracks 66 data center facilities in Osaka, operated by 25 providers, the largest being Colt Osaka Keihanna at 46MW, with 12 facilities under construction.
The KIX Campus carries weight in that market. MC Digital Osaka 4 (KIX13), the venture's most recent Osaka building, holds DGX-Ready Data Center certification, and the campus totals about 74MW of IT capacity across four halls.
