Digital Realty has bought additional land for data centers in Amsterdam, Netherlands. This week, the company disclosed the acquisition of a 387,500-square-foot (8.9-acre) land parcel on its Amsterdam Schiphol campus. According to reports, the acquired land parcel can sustain a 40MW data center and will be connected to Digital Realty's existing Schiphol facilities. Potential development timelines were not disclosed. The opposition to data centers in the Netherlands, particularly hyperscale facilities, is vehement.

The national government imposed a nine-month moratorium on hyperscale data centers in 2022, followed by stricter regulations in the summer. From 2019 to 2020, Amsterdam had its one-year moratorium on data center development. Digital operates thirteen data centers in Amsterdam comprising 111,200 square feet and 132MW. The majority of these are located in the Schiphol-Rijk industrial estate.
