Developer Withdraws Data Center Proposal in St. Joseph, Missouri

An application to rezone and annex land for a proposed data center in St. Joseph, Missouri, has been withdrawn. Capstone Technology Campus, owned by local businessman Steve Craig, had sought approval for a 130-acre development across sites at 6321 and 5701 Pickett Road. The City of St. Joseph confirmed on June 26 that both applications were withdrawn at the developer’s request.

The proposal had been scheduled for consideration at a July 23 planning commission meeting. The City of St. Joseph said any future submission would require new applications and go through the standard review process. A draft fact sheet indicated the project would have been developed by Atmosphere Data Centers, a US operator led by Chuck McBride, formerly of Radius DC.

A draft site plan showed the project could have included four data center buildings and a substation. Opponents raised concerns about environmental impact, noise pollution, and limited economic benefit, arguing the land would be better used for other types of development. Two petitions against the project have collected more than 720 and 1,500 signatures. St. Joseph is in Buchanan County, western Missouri, near the Kansas border.Data_center_St._Joseph_County_Missouri_6321_Pi.width-358.webp
