Sentinel Data Centers has reportedly abandoned plans to develop a data center at a former paper mill site in Jay, Maine. The decision was first reported by the Sun Journal.JGT2 Redevelopment, which had planned to partner with Sentinel on the $550 million project, told Jay officials that the data center company no longer intends to proceed with the development.
“JGT2 is pursuing conversations with other interested parties, but the data center project is currently on hold,” Jay officials posted on Facebook this week. “Future plans are yet to be determined.”
The former Androscoggin Mill, which closed in 2023 after an explosion damaged equipment, was slated to house around 1 million square feet of colocation data center space developed by Sentinel across two floors. The project had the support of local officials and construction was expected to begin this summer. Founded in 2001, Sentinel has developed more than 3 million square feet of data center space across the US and is currently pursuing projects in Indiana, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Northern Virginia, and Washington.
JGT2 purchased the mill site in December 2023 and has since demolished several buildings to prepare for redevelopment.
In April, Maine Governor Janet Mills vetoed a bill that would have imposed the first statewide moratorium on data centers in the US, and lawmakers failed to override the decision.vv
