A proposed data center outside Calgary, Canada, has been withdrawn by its developer. Kalina Distributed Power, a subsidiary of Australia’s Kalina Power, pulled its plan for the Lone Pine Energy Centre near Airdrie, which included a data center and 200MW gas-fired power plant. The company cited local opposition as the reason for the withdrawal.
“As an Alberta-based company committed to responsible power development, we have engaged with the community and taken their feedback into account. Accordingly, we are not proceeding with our proposal to develop the project on the above-mentioned site,” reads the email.
“As a result, we are withdrawing the project from the current land use redistricting pre-application process and will engage in further discussions with the County, including the relocation of the project.”
Airdrie is about 35km (22 miles) north of Calgary, Alberta’s largest city. Kalina says it is developing around 2GW of energy projects in Alberta to power data centers using 200MW combined-cycle gas plants with optional carbon capture. The company has also been approved for a 64MW gas plant in Saddle Hills and partnered with Crusoe in 2025 to develop gas-powered AI data centers in the province.
