Slate Asset Management is redeveloping the former Stelco steelworks in Hamilton as Steelport, a planned 800-acre mixed-use industrial district. Slate sought approvals that would allow data centres on the lands.

Site History

2025: Slate applied to the IESO to connect a large load at Steelport.
April 2026: Council excluded the Steelport lands from the first employment-area Official Plan amendment.
June 2026: Hamilton's Committee of Adjustment refused Slate's land severance after an eight-hour meeting and more than 1,600 letters of opposition.
June 2026: Slate appealed to the Ontario Land Tribunal. Slate says it has no specific hyperscale or data centre proposal for the land at this time.
July 2026: Hamilton council voted down an interim control by-law on data centres.
October 2026: The Tribunal set a first case management conference for October 21.

The Digital Research Alliance of Canada has proposed a national AI compute facility on about three hectares of the Steelport lands, subject to federal funding.
