Oracle and OpenAI are planning a massive new data center in Shackelford County, Texas, dubbed "Stargate," that will be powered by its own on-site natural gas plant.

This approach, known as a "microgrid," will use hundreds of natural gas generators to generate all the electricity the data center needs, bypassing the public power grid. This strategy allows the data center to avoid delays caused by the strained U.S. power infrastructure, enabling it to come online faster, possibly as early as 2026.

The plan mirrors the power setup at the first Stargate site in Abilene, Texas, which also uses its own fleet of natural gas generators. Vantage Data Centers has been confirmed as the development partner for the Shackelford County location.
