The Lordstown campus, located at the former General Motors plant purchased by SoftBank for $375 million, was initially designed to host a key data center for OpenAI's nationwide Stargate infrastructure initiative.

However, following intense local pushback over utility strain, the Lordstown Village Council implemented a strict permit moratorium that has frozen large-scale data center construction. In response, SoftBank and Foxconn have pivoted the site's primary objective, transforming the massive industrial footprint into a high-tech manufacturing hub dedicated to building modular data center components and server equipment for other unhindered Stargate sites.
