Developer Homer City Redevelopment (HCR) and Kiewit are partnering on a significant energy and technology project in Pennsylvania. They plan to convert the decommissioned 2GW Homer City Generating Station into a natural gas-powered AI data center campus. This ambitious undertaking, named The Homer City Energy Campus, will span over 3,200 acres.

Construction is scheduled to begin in 2025, with the data center expected to be operational by 2027. The initial investment of over $10 billion will fund power infrastructure and site readiness. This project, with billions more anticipated for data center construction, marks the largest investment in Pennsylvania's history.

  • Update: Environmental groups are urging the Pennsylvania DEP to deny a permit for the proposed 4.5 GW natural gas power plant at the Homer City AI data center site, claiming it would be the state's largest CO2 polluter, harm public health, and benefit only private industry without offering sufficient economic return to Pennsylvanians. The groups argue the DEP's process improperly favored the developers.

Homer City Generating Station began operations in 1969, employing thousands with jobs and millions of customers with energy when in production. Located only 50 miles east of Pittsburgh, the facility was the largest coal-burning power plant in Pennsylvania and is directly connected to both the PJM and NYISO transmission systems. After powering the region for nearly 55 years, the power plant was permanently decommissioned on July 1, 2023. The Homer City Generating Station has been revitalized through reinvestment and the opening of Homer City Redevelopment. Working with committed and quality partners, HCR is vested in turning the old plant into something positively transformative.
