Google is pausing its $200 million data center project in Chile to address environmental concerns and revise its design.

The plan for the vast data center in the Cerrillos area of Santiago, initially permitted in 2020, faced local pushback and legal issues related to water usage. An environmental court partially reversed the permit in early 2024, instructing Google to revise the application to account for the impacts of climate change and its effect on the capital's strained aquifer. As a result, Google will revise the project to meet more stringent environmental requirements and change its current water-intensive cooling system.
