Balloonist LLC owns about 310 acres north of Interstate 94 in Menomonie, between 650th and 690th Avenues. The city annexed the land from the Town of Red Cedar and rezoned it in August 2025 for a proposed $1.6 billion data center campus. Plans showed as many as 15 buildings and equipment yards.
The city council paused the project in September 2025 after public opposition. In January 2026 Menomonie created a data center zoning district, and Balloonist must reapply under it. The city delayed a vote on the zoning rules in October 2026. Balloonist has said construction would not start before 2027.
