Data Center Development in Wisconsin delayed

Following public opposition, the Menomonie City Council has temporarily halted plans for a $1.6 billion data center. In August 2025, the council approved the annexation and rezoning of a parcel of land from the town of Red Cedar for the proposed project.
The land, which is located between 650th and 690th Avenue, north of I-94, could be developed to include as many as 15 "buildings/equipment yards." The number of data centers planned for the site has not been specified.
At the time of the August vote, city officials informed residents that the approval was only for the annexation and rezoning of the land, and not for the construction itself. They also assured the community that an environmental assessment would be conducted before any construction on a data center could begin. Balloonist LLC, the company behind the project, also stated that they had no site plan yet and that construction would not start until at least 2027.
