The proposed Amazon Data Services (AWS) project in Wilmington, Ohio, is a massive $4 billion investment planned for a 471-acre campus at 1488 South U.S. 68. The facility is expected to consist of at least 12 single-story data center buildings, a private substation, and a water treatment facility, promising to create 100 permanent jobs with an annual payroll of $8 million. To support the site, AWS has pledged $25 million for local infrastructure, including a new 1-million-gallon water tower and expanded sewer lines.
However, the project is currently postponed following a unanimous vote by the Wilmington Planning Commission on January 6, 2026, to table the site plan. This delay stems from intense community opposition and the city's demand for more transparency regarding noise levels from 252 diesel generators, traffic impact, and the environmental safety of the cooling systems.
