In 2024, Amazon Web Services (AWS) acquired Talen Energy’s data center campus, located adjacent to the Susquehanna Steam Electric Station, a nuclear power plant in Pennsylvania. Originally developed by Talen Energy’s Cumulus division, the campus was sold to AWS for $650 million, including the site and assets of Cumulus Data.

Under the 2024 agreement, AWS committed to purchasing power from Talen in 120-MW increments for the data center, with potential expansion to 960 MW. AWS also retains a one-time option to cap its commitment at 480 MW.

In 2025, Talen Energy and AWS signed a 17-year Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) to supply AWS with 1.92 GW of energy from the 2.5 GW Susquehanna nuclear power plant. The PPA, effective until 2042, includes an option to extend and will ramp up power delivery over seven years, reaching full capacity by 2032.

Announced in July 2021, the 1,200-acre campus draws power from Talen’s 2.5 GW Susquehanna Steam Electric Station in Luzerne County. Construction began in 2021, and by early 2023, Talen completed a 300,000-square-foot (28,870 sqm) hyperscale data center and a separate cryptomining facility.

Talen’s Susquehanna Nuclear Facility, a 2,520 MW nuclear generating station, comprises two 1,260 MW units.
