- Update: Amazon has suspended plans for this data center in Becker, Minnesota.
Site History
Amazon Data Services acquired 348 acres in Becker, Minnesota for $73.6 million to develop a data center project. The land was previously part of Xcel Energy Inc.'s Sherco Site. Amazon is proposing to install 250 diesel generators at its planned data center.
The transaction involved several ownership changes: Elk River Technologies first purchased the parcel from Xcel Energy in April 2024 for $7.97 million, then sold it to Amazon—representing a substantial price increase in a short period.
This development comes after earlier plans for the site fell through in 2022, when negotiations between Xcel Energy and Google for a potential data center project were unsuccessful.
In February 2024, Microsoft bought 300 acres of land from Xcel nearby in Becker.
