In May 2022, AboutBit announced a five-year agreement to obtain 115 MW of power from the Merom coal-fired power plant, stating their cryptocurrency mining facility was expected to be operational within 30 days. However, in December 2023, AboutBit's CEO indicated that this 2022 announcement was no longer accurate and denied any connection between their mining operation and the continued operation of the Merom Generating Station.
Initial Plan:
Founded in 2019, AboutBit is a Kentucky-based startup born from cryptocurrency potential and the resolution of wasteful emissions. Team leaders and founders Stacy Griggs, Wade Lewis, Calvin Wells, Dan Kimball, Richard Teachout and Chris Porter saw the yin and yang of the cryptocurrency boom — and crafted a solution to crypto mining while producing fewer carbon emissions than the coal-fired plants that currently mine much of the worlds cryptocurrencies. Of the nation’s 2M+ abandoned unplugged wells, millions of tons of Greenhouse Gas emissions are produced annually. And so, AboutBit created a series of turnkey containerized data centers powered by an alternative source of energy: natural gas wells and flared gas energy. Each pod is temperature-controlled with cooling technology, fueling up to 700 miners. Through a partnership with Starlink, the pods are equipped with unparalleled connectivity to ensure that mining operations continue without interruption, utilizing less power. As we continue to invest in expansion, AboutBit’s vision to reduce the crypto carbon footprint sees fruition.
