Tata Communications will invest close to $450 million to lay about 10,000 kilometers of new AI-ready fiber across India. The company announced the plan on October 26 and calls the build its AI Super Highway. Tata Communications funds and owns the network and will operate it as part of its existing backbone.

The planned investment runs from $400 million to $450 million for roughly 10,000 kilometers of new long-haul fiber. Data Center Dynamics reported on October 28 that Tata Communications will carry out the buildout in three phases. The first phase links Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Chennai. Later phases extend into emerging East Coast and Western India data center ecosystems, including Visakhapatnam, Bhubaneswar, Jamnagar and GIFT City.

Tata Communications says the fiber is designed for hyperscalers, AI platforms, neocloud providers and enterprises. Linking the corridors and data center clusters to international cable landing stations is meant to move traffic between India and global AI hubs. The network integrates with the company's global backbone, which Tata Communications says spans more than 500,000 kilometers of subsea optical fiber and more than 200,000 kilometers of terrestrial fiber.

Ganesh Lakshminarayanan, managing director and chief executive of Tata Communications, said the company expects India's data center-to-data center connectivity market to exceed $1 billion over the medium term. "We are building on our existing strengths to create one of the most comprehensive data center connectivity platforms in the market," he said.

Rupesh Chokshi, chief product and technology officer and global business head of network services at Tata Communications, said the AI economy needs a network built for speed, scale and resilience. "Our AI Network Fabric will give our global customers the ultra-low-latency, high-capacity and resilient connectivity they need to scale AI with confidence," he said.

Two subsea projects run alongside the build. Tata Communications said in June 2026 that it planned a new subsea cable system between Mumbai and Singapore. Tata Communications is also a consortium member in a new cable connecting Chennai to Singapore, which the company expects ready for service in the fourth quarter of 2029. TelecomTalk reported on October 27 that the company has not given a completion date for the full 10,000 kilometers.

Baxtel tracks 320 data center facilities in India, operated by 52 providers.
