Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) has reportedly acquired land in southern and western India for potential data center developments that could support OpenAI. The company received 200 acres in Andhra Pradesh and purchased an 88-acre site near Pune, Maharashtra. The reports did not confirm that the facilities would be used by OpenAI.
But in February, OpenAI announced that Tata would be a partner in its ‘OpenAI for India’ initiative, which would see the construction of “local, AI-ready data center capacity”. The ChatGPT-maker then said that it would be the first customer of Tata’s data center business HyperVault, beginning with 100MW of capacity potentially scaling to 1GW.
HyperVault was launched in October 2025 with plans to develop 1GW of data center capacity. TCS’ current data center footprint is unclear, while Tata Communications reportedly operates around 22 facilities across five countries. The Tata Group traces its origins to the 1860s, with TCS founded in 1968. OpenAI is developing data center projects across the US, Norway, UAE, Australia, and South Korea, with potential sites in Argentina and Canada.
