We Energies Begins Three Renewable Projects to Help Power Vantage Data Center

Wisconsin utility We Energies has begun construction on three renewable energy and battery storage projects, with about half of their combined capacity earmarked for a major AI data center campus in Port Washington. The projects include a 150MW solar farm with 50MWh of battery storage, a 110MW wind farm, and a 75MW battery storage facility. All are expected to be completed by the end of 2027.

Chicago-based Invenergy will develop the projects before transferring ownership to Wisconsin utilities. We Energies will hold the majority stake, with Madison Gas & Electric and Wisconsin Public Service owning the remainder. Around half of each project’s capacity will support the $15 billion Port Washington data center campus being developed by Vantage Data Centers, Oracle, and OpenAI. Announced in October, the 672-acre campus will support OpenAI and Oracle’s Stargate initiative. It is planned to reach 902MW and 2.5 million sq ft (232,255 sqm) across four buildings, with operations expected in 2028.

We Energies has more than 3GW of solar and wind capacity and around 600MW of battery storage operating, under construction, or awaiting approval. The utility recently introduced a large-load tariff requiring hyperscale data center customers to fund dedicated generation and transmission infrastructure. The Wisconsin Public Service Commission approved the tariff earlier this year, with Vantage previously agreeing to cover 100 percent of its dedicated power infrastructure costs.
