Microsoft’s First Data Center at Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin Campus Now Operational

The first data center at Microsoft’s Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin campus is now officially operational, the company confirmed on June 23. Construction was completed just over two years after the project was first announced. The site is part of Microsoft’s “Fairwater” data center design and will form part of a multi-building AI cluster. CEO Satya Nadella previously indicated in April 2026 that the campus was going live ahead of schedule, though its full operational status was not clear at the time.

Microsoft has been developing its Mount Pleasant, Wisconsin campus since 2023, after taking over land previously intended for Foxconn. The initial phase covered 315 acres with three buildings totaling 1.2 million sq ft. The project has required major infrastructure buildout, including extensive piling, steelwork, cabling, and piping. Microsoft later secured approval to expand by 1,000 acres, continued land purchases, and in January 2026 received approval for 15 additional data center buildings.

“With our Fairwater data center now fully operational, Wisconsin is now home to the world’s most powerful supercomputer,” said Brad Smith, vice chair and president, Microsoft. “This campus will help power the next generation of AI innovation globally and provide long-term economic opportunity locally through hundreds of highly skilled jobs and continued investment in the region.”

Village President David DeGroot called the project a major milestone for Mount Pleasant and Racine County, highlighting its role as a growing tech hub. Microsoft estimates $4.7 billion in local hyperscale investment between 2024 and 2028, with a second Mount Pleasant facility expected in 2028. The village sits about 30 miles south of Milwaukee and 60 miles north of Chicago.
