A pair of data centers with a combined capacity of 5MW is planned for development in Nepal. Local operator Bichuten Data Vault announced that the facilities will also represent Nepal’s first Tier IV hyperscale data center. The two planned facilities will be located in Kathmandu, Nepal’s capital, and in Birgunj, about 130km (80.7 miles) south of Kathmandu. According to Nepalkhabar, the project will start with an initial capacity of 240kW and is expected to scale up to 5MW by 2030.

Bichuten said the facilities will be powered entirely by Nepalese hydropower. According to the International Energy Agency, nearly all of Nepal’s electricity generation already comes from hydroelectric sources. The company also states on its website that it operates multiple projects across the country, including two in the southern Lumbini Province, two near Kathmandu, one in Koshi Province, and another in the central Gandaki Province.
