Telxius To Build Edge Data Center In Cancún, Mexico

Telxius is developing a carrier-neutral cable landing station and Edge data center in Cancún, Mexico. The facility will combine submarine cable connectivity, terrestrial networks, and computing infrastructure, serving as a landing point for the Tikal submarine cable linking Guatemala and Florida. Tikal is expected to launch in H1 2027 with an initial backbone capacity of around 380Tbps.

The Tikal cable will create a new route between the Caribbean and the US, improving network resilience and reducing reliance on existing paths. The Cancún facility will also provide an alternative connection to Santiago de Querétaro, a major Mexican data center market. Announced in 2023 by Telxius and América Móvil, Tikal was later expanded to include Mexico as a landing point. The Cancún gateway will complement Telxius’ regional infrastructure, including the SAm-1 and PCCS submarine cables and the Punta Cana Landing Gateway in the Dominican Republic.

The Cancún site will also include a Tier III Edge data center for data-intensive and latency-sensitive workloads. The facility will feature N+1 and 2N redundancy for critical power and cooling systems, alongside physical and network security measures.
