Zimbabwe: TelOne Opens Fourth Data Center in Zimbabwe

Zimbabwe’s state-owned telecommunication company TelOne has opened a new data center in Mazowe, Zimbabwe. This is the company’s fourth data center. The managing director at TelOne, Chipo Mutasa revealed that the company has spent over US$4 million in the development of 14,000 square feet (1,300 square meters) of floor space. TelOne also expanded the facility from 14 racks to 34 racks. Power Engineering Company and Tendo Electronics partnered with TelOne on the project.

The facility is located at the Mazowe Earth Station, which is the country’s main communications satellite earth receiving station. Earlier in 2020. the country’s government revealed that it would be expanding the Earth station by developing a new data center. The budget for the expansion earmarked at the time was $25 million. Jenfran Muswere, Zimbabwe’s Information Communication Technology minister said the project would help improve the country’s data sovereignty by ensuring the information of Zimbabweans stay in Zimbabwe.
