Zoning approval has been given to Stream Data Centers for an envisioned data center facility in the Elk Grove area of Chicago, Illinois. At last week's council meeting in Elk Grove Village, plan commissioners jointly recommended approval of the proposals, as first reported by the Journal & Topics. The company plans to demolish approximately 55 residential properties in Elk Grove to construct a three-building data center facility with an on-site substation. The three structures will encompass more than 2 million square feet.
While Stream Data Centers has submitted a separate request for annexation and re-subdivision of houses along Roppolo Drive, Richard Lane, Landmeier Road, and Dierking Terrace, this application is primarily concerned with rezoning from unincorporated residential to I-1 industrial with several variances. John Glass, chairman of the county's Plan Committee, estimates that construction could commence in late 2025 or early 2026 and take up to 10 years to complete. According to reports, annexation is being delayed due to questions regarding firefighting and financing for local fire services.
