Proposed 99MW Data Center in Kern County, California

Jul 07, 2026 | Posted by Abdul-Rahman Oladimeji

Applications have been submitted for the development of a 99 MW data center in California. The proposed facility would be located near the intersection of US Highway 395 and State Route 178 in Inyokern, an unincorporated community within Kern County, California. The single-story, 238,000 sq ft (22,110 sqm) data center is planned to include an on-site electrical substation. The facility would comprise six data halls and incorporate a combination of liquid and air cooling technologies.

The first phase of the 99 MW project would deliver 60 MW, with construction expected to begin in April 2027 and operations targeted for November 2028. The 50-acre campus, located between US 395 and North Brown Road, would include parking lot solar canopies and 40 diesel generators providing up to 99 MW of backup power.

The project was first reported in May 2026 and has since faced opposition, including a Change.org petition with more than 1,140 signatures. Support has been expressed by regional labor and economic development groups, while opposition letters have been submitted by local organizations, including the city of Ridgecrest, China Lake Naval Base, and Sierra Sands Unified School District. Inyokern Airport has also requested an aviation impact analysis.rbinyokerndatacenter_dot_com.width-358.webp
