Prometheus Hyperscale will not build its planned 1,250 MW data center campus near Casper, Wyoming, the developer said on October 28. Company president Trevor Neilson told WyoFile that Prometheus is withdrawing from the project in Natrona and Converse counties. Prometheus was the developer of the campus, and Falls Ranch, a limited partnership that owns the land, says the project will continue under a new developer.

The $500 million project at Prometheus' Casper site was planned for 940 acres of the Falls Ranch property south of Interstate 25, about 10 miles east of Casper. It was to include data halls and on-site natural gas generation, using closed-loop liquid cooling to limit water use. Prometheus announced the campus in October 2025 with carbon capture firms Spiritus and Casper Carbon Capture, and in August 2026 added Mesa Power Solutions for natural gas generators, according to DCD. Prometheus had not filed a permit application with the Natrona County Planning and Zoning Commission before withdrawing. Local coverage has described the campus capacity as anywhere from 1.25 GW to 1.5 GW.

The decision surprised county officials. "I don't see the Natrona County government as being a deciding factor for them to pull out, but I don't know," said Jim Milne, chairman of the Natrona County Commission, per WyoFile. Prometheus founder Trenton Thornock had asked commissioners in September to establish an industrial park zoning designation, which would have let the project bypass review by the Wyoming Industrial Siting Council. Those talks had not reached the point of negotiations.

Falls Ranch said the development will continue without delay under a new development company. "We anticipate that with this change, the project should continue forward on a more efficient track, including community and business collaborations," said Falls Ranch representative Robert Hand, in a statement to Oil City News. Falls Ranch did not name the incoming developer, and says public meetings on the site are planned for 2027.

Prometheus is still developing its flagship Evanston campus in Uinta County, which the Uinta County Board of Commissioners approved in June. "We are thrilled with our progress in Evanston with Uinta County," Neilson said. Baxtel tracks 29 data center facilities across Wyoming, operated by 15 providers, with Microsoft's North Range Business Park the largest at 200 MW.
