Google Signs 20-Year Nuclear PPA With Constellation For 890MW In PJM

Google will buy 890 MW of new nuclear output from Constellation Energy under a 20-year power purchase agreement covering 11 reactors across the PJM Interconnection, the companies announced on Oct. 6. Constellation will spend more than $4.3 billion upgrading reactors in Illinois, Pennsylvania and New Jersey, with the first uprate expected by 2028.

The 890 MW is new supply, not reshuffled output. It comes through uprates, which modernize turbines, steam generators and digital control systems so reactors already running produce more electricity. That path sidesteps the multi-year waits and interconnection logjams that dog greenfield nuclear.

A second agreement runs 15 years and covers 2,700 MW from Constellation's existing PJM fleet. The companies call it revenue certainty that keeps those plants economical without pulling their output off the grid.

Together the two contracts total about 3.6 GW.

Constellation has not published the full unit list. A company spokesman told ANS Nuclear Newswire that the work spans Braidwood, Byron, LaSalle and Quad Cities in Illinois, Limerick in Pennsylvania, and PSEG Nuclear's Salem in New Jersey, where Constellation owns 43 percent.

The deal sustains roughly 4,400 existing jobs and creates about 7,200 construction jobs, the companies said. It also builds in demand response, letting Constellation curtail non-critical load during grid stress, and adds a five-year agreement for Constellation to run Gemini Enterprise agentic workflows on Google Cloud for grid planning and operations.

"We're committed to meeting our growth responsibly by actively investing in clean, reliable power that brings new capacity to our nation's grids," said Amanda Peterson Corio, global head of energy and power at Google. "This long-term clean energy collaboration with Google can serve as a model for how technology companies and the energy industry can work together," said Joe Dominguez, chairman, president and CEO at Constellation.

Google's timing answers a specific pressure. PJM has proposed that large loads bring their own generation or face curtailment at peak demand, and Reuters reported that the contract is a direct response to that proposal. The structure adds supply inside the grid rather than routing around it.

The agreement lands one week after Constellation's 20-year deal to add 190 MW at Calvert Cliffs for Amazon, covered on Baxtel. Google has now signed nuclear contracts in Texas, Iowa and Finland, and sits behind several campuses in the same Mid-Atlantic and Midwest markets.

Baxtel tracks 247 Google data center sites globally and counts 138 data centers across Pennsylvania, one of the three states where the new capacity lands.

For operators and developers in PJM, the arithmetic is blunt. Firm, always-on power is the scarce input in the AI buildout, and 890 MW is modest against a single gigawatt-scale campus.

The deal shows hyperscalers moving from buying clean energy credits to underwriting the physical expansion of the grid's existing fleet. In PJM, access to capacity increasingly depends on who can help finance supply, not only who can sign a lease.
