Google: Google Downtime Due to Paris Global Switch Data Center Fire Caused by Water Leak

The Paris data center of Global Switch caught fire, bringing down Google services in Europe. According to a post to the French Network Operators Group, the fire seems to have been started by a cooling system water pump malfunction that caused water to leak into the battery room, sparking the fire. In the morning, Global Switch announced that a fire broke out in one of their two data centers on their Paris campus. The Fire Brigade has responded, and the blaze has been contained. The building's fire suppression systems performed as intended, and no one was injured. Several customers were temporarily impacted, and the site team was tasked with restoring services as soon as possible.

Customers of government websites and services operated by Courbevoie, Lille, Saint-Brieuc, Cannes, and the Saône-et-Loire department are affected. The websites of French consulates and embassies, as well as Lyon Aéroports are also affected. The Europe-west9-a region's Google Cloud services have been brought down.  Ecritel, a local hosting company, also utilizes the data center, with some of its services unavailable. Orange and Ubisoft games have reported outages, but it is unknown if they are related. The full scope of the data center's damage was not disclosed.
