Data Center Fire Causes Zenith Bank Disruption in Nigeria

May 04, 2023 | Posted by Abdul-Rahman Oladimeji

Per a report by TechCabal, the power backup system at Zenith Bank in Nigeria was damaged by fire, which resulted in a blackout at the data center. The outage began at seven in the morning, affecting customers, and majority of the bank's services were down. According to TechCabal, the bank did not have a disaster recovery data center, but it was not operating in an active-active configuration during the incident. The bank however, quickly made the transition to manually switching over the services, and they were online later that day. The bank did not respond to requests for comments, but more information would be provided as soon as available.

The outage follows a series of fires and disruptions. Just a week ago, a fire at a Global Switch data center in Paris triggered by a water leak in the battery room caused an outage. And a month ago another data center in France was destroyed by fire, and a fire at a data center in Australia was responsible for the failure of a hospital patient records system in that country. A lithium-ion battery fire in South Korea caused a KakaoTalk outage that wreaked havoc across the nation, and a power room issue led to a small fire at an Equinix data center.

There are 18 data centers in Nigeria.
